On behalf of children’s rights: KNC-President signed a petition against the recruitment of minors

On March 8, 2016 a member of the KNC Geneva office attended the 31st UN Human Rights Council`s session on violence against children and on children in armed conflict. Following the reports of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children and the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Children in Armed Conflict, delegates of member states as well as representatives of accredited NGOs had the possibility to make a short statement and ask questions. The delegate of the Syrian Arab Republic stated that Syria had adopted a new action plan to protect children in war. Moreover, the delegate explained that is was difficult to implement this plan in the presence of “governments supporting terrorism”. The delegate of New Zealand asked for mechanisms to ensure better that non-state actors comply with international norms that protect children in war. Indeed, in Syria not only the Baathregime but also numerous non-state actors, among them the YPG, recruit minors. Regarding that topic we can announce that the KNC-president Ibrahim Biro signed a petition against the recruitment of children by the PYD.
