Statement regarding the terrorist attack in al-Hasakah

Kurdish National Council in Syria – Geneva Office
04 October 2016

In the evening of October 3, 2016, a suicide bomber blew himself up at a wedding of the Fatîme family in a predominantely Kurdish quarter of the city of al-Hasakah and killed at least 20 people. Another 70 were injured. Among the victims are numerous public figures, e. g. the politician Baha Fatîme, Central Committee member of the Kurdish Union Party in Syria (Yekîtî). The suicide bombing, for which the IS claimed responsibility, is a further harrowing experience in people’s life in that region after the IS-attacks in the cities of Qamishli and Hasakah in July 2016.

The Kurdish National Council in Syria condemns this terror attack and conveys its sincerest condolences to all relatives and friends of the victims assassinated and injured.

Kamiran Hajo, head of the Foreign Relations Office of the KNC, states: “This perfidious crime shows once more the importance to effectively protect the Kurdish territories and its people. The KNC is determined to establish security and to fight all kinds of terrorism. The return of the Roj-Peshmerga to Syrian Kurdistan is indispensable to prevent such horrible attacks on civil life in the future. The Roj-Peshmerga were trained in Iraqi Kurdistan and are thus field-proved in the fight against the IS. We demand that the PYD dismisses its claim for exclusive control and offers the KNC the opportunity to contribute to the security of the Kurdish regions in Syria.”
