KNC-President opens new office and speaks about peace for Syria

Ibrahim Biro inaugurated the Geneva office of the Kurdish National Council in Syria in the presence of diplomats of several permanent missions

Establishing an office in Geneva for the Kurdish National Council (KNC) is an essential step especially in the present days with the world at the ready for the next round of peace talks within the framework of international efforts to achieve peace in Syria. The main activities will be directed on the inclusion of the political positions of the KNC into the debates as one of the main topics during Geneva III talks as well as on the positive contribution to achieve peace and to build up Syria as a federal state which will offer stability and democracy for all people living in Syria.

On Friday, February 26, 2016 Ibrahim Biro, KNC president, and Siamend Hajo, member of foreign relations committee of KNC, opened the Geneva office in the presence of Andreas Krüger, head of the Middle East division of the German Federal Foreign Office, Berk Baran, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Permanent Mission of Turkey to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Abdulhadi Saeed Al-Gahtani, first secretary at the permanent mission of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Maxim Efimov, third secretary of the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation and Katharina Lack from the team of the Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura. Further congratulating guests at the inauguration were representatives of the Syrian National Coalition (SNC) as well as of Yehia Maktabi, its Secretary-General, the members of the KNC of Europe and Switzerland, of the Kurdish Democratic Party of Syria (PDKS), of NGOs like the Human Rights Organization Syria-MAF or Geneva Call and members of the Kurdish community in Geneva. A lot of other international missions apologized due to the tight agenda concerning the peace talks and the Human Rights Council sessions starting next week.

In his speech Ibrahim Biro welcomed the attendees and explained the function and the goals of the office consisting in strengthening the role of the Kurdish delegation to the High Negotiations Committee during the next round of Geneva talks, in developing relations between the KNC and the diplomatic missions as well as in emphasizing the vision of KNC in the Western media. Afterwards Ibrahim Biro thanked all guests and expressed his pleasure to the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs about its honest support for the KNC to establish this office in Geneva.
